Why Your Family Doesn’t Belong in Your Boardroom!

I’m a big fan of “Take Your Child to Work Day”. I’m even an advocate for creating family-friendly cultures at work and treating everyone – especially line staff – like family. What I’m not a fan of is bringing family drama and unproductive relationships into the office. And probably the worst place of all for this dysfunction is the executive boardroom!

Family businesses by their very nature are complex organizations. On the plus side, they can transcend your everyday workplace by offering rich environments where family members can be more than just family. Family members can literally come together and build something – namely the company – that provides opportunities for not only financial gain but also community contribution. The challenge though is that family businesses also create the possibility for greater stress and anxiety that some family members are not equipped to handle when their familial relationships are not as positive.

1Why Your Family Doesn't Belong in Your Boardroom!

I don’t care if it’s married partners, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, cousins, or any mix in between. Families share history together, and this history can at times manifest itself in very hurtful and damaging ways at work. The goal of an organization is to “do something”. That “something” may be producing a product or delivering a service. It may be selling direct to the public, or maybe it’s creating a marketplace for business-to-business exchanges. Whatever it is, that’s no place for family mayhem to ensue. Read more ›

Why Group Coaching May Be Better than One-on-One!

Over the past couple of years, I’ve been fortunate enough to participate in a few different group coaching efforts. A Chief Executive peer support group with @Vistage. An Action Learning Group for the Bay Area OD Network. (Read The Power of Action Learning for more about this extraordinary multi-year group experience in particular.) And now, a variety of others coaching mid-level leadership of our organizational clients. Through all of these experiences, I’ve come to believe that group coaching may in fact be better than more traditional one-on-one executive coaching!

Why Group Coaching May Be Better than One-on-One!

This approach of peer support combined with fundamental group facilitation practices has become a very effective way to coach individual leaders. The traditional one-on-one model regularly puts the role of “expert” on to the executive coach. While external executive coaches may offer great insights and be able to get their clients to think out of the box and try new leadership approaches, there is much that an external coach cannot and never will be able to do.

External coaches do not live day in and day out within their clients’ organizations. By design, we simply come and go just as your personal trainer might help you work out at the gym but does not follow you around all day to make sure you don’t eat that bag of chips or grab an extra cookie! In addition, executive coaches are not peers to the leaders being coached. Again, we live outside of the organization and therefore have very different rather than like perspectives. In essence, coaches can serve as “guides” for anyone taking the leadership journey. We are not, however, the only signposts to observe along the way. Read more ›

CliffsNotes Guide To Managing the Ones Who Used To Be Your Peers

I still remember the first time I was promoted into a senior leadership position and all of a sudden had a couple of my best friends reporting to me. Weird, awkward, difficult, and challenging are all words that immediately come to mind to describe that situation. Not fun, not desirable, not collaborative, and definitely not a few other words I wish I could have used instead!

CliffsNotes Guide To Managing the Ones Who Used To Be Your Peers

Much of my executive coaching these days is with Next Generation leaders who either were recently promoted or are currently being considered for promotions. One of the greatest challenges these NextGen leaders face seems to be managing the people who used to be their peers, and in many cases used to be people they considered to be close friends. Worse than that actually is trying to manage the people who didn’t get those promotions because they may have some added resistance thinking they would have been great fits for the jobs. Read more ›

Plus Delta’s CEO Discusses What a Performance Review Is – and What It Isn’t! – at 2014 @CAHRConference

How often have you heard a business leader grimace or otherwise complain when HR announces it’s time to complete annual performance reviews? People often think of performance management as that thing they have to do for HR at the end of the year so that people can qualify for their bonuses or other pay increases. While that may be part of the process, performance management is not just a once-a-year HR task. It’s an always, ongoing activity! Managing performance is the only reliable way to assure your people are working on the right things, give them the feedback – both positive and constructive – they need to succeed, and ultimately get continuously better results. When done well, an effective performance management process produces continuous performance improvements throughout the year, rather than isolated feedback that might create unsustainable behavioral change at best once in a while.

During this workshop, Dr. Lurey will review everyone’s critical roles – Managers, Employees, and HR Professionals – as part of the performance management process. Participants will also gain clarity about what an annual performance review is and what it isn’t – specifically learning several Do’s and Don’ts in the review process – as well as discuss several leading practices to enhance any existing performance management process.

  • What: Best Practices for Designing Your Always, Ongoing Performance Management Process (aka What a Performance Review Is – and What It Isn’t!)
  • When: Tuesday, August 26th from 11:15am – 12:30pm
  • Where: Anaheim Convention Center

Click here to access the California HR Conference home page and register for this exciting program. And if you can’t make it to Anaheim, give us a call at +1.310.589.4600 or email us to discuss how else you can learn these leading business practices. Read more ›

Flipping the Switch is NOT the Same as Using the System!

Have you ever been sitting at a traffic signal waiting for the light to turn green – while in a hurry of course! – and the person in front of you is still texting away when the light finally does change? Getting someone to actually do something is very different than simply giving that person the tools he or she needs to perform that action. That’s why flipping the switch and activating a new computer system is not at all the same as having your employees actually use that new system!

Flipping the Switch is NOT the Same as Using the System!

In our world of implementing positive changes in organizations, we consider it the critical difference between “go live” and “adoption”. You might be implementing new business processes or maybe it’s standardizing your operating procedures rather than installing a new computer system. Regardless of the nature of the changes you are implementing, having people accept those changes takes much more than simply declaring they are now in effect. It’s very much like having that light turn green and not having the first driver move his/her car. It has nothing to do with whether or not the light works. Instead, it has everything to do with whether or not the driver chooses to move! Read more ›
