I don't know if I'd say it's the next "great app", but I would definitely say that social media tools and Web 2.0 capabilities are here to stay. These tools are making their way into "organizations" of every size and type, from large corporations, to small entrepreneurial ventures, non-profits and community efforts. In our newly released book, SOCIAL MEDIA AT WORK, we found examples in all these areas. Smart organizations are incorporating Web 2.0 into their operating models and having great success in recruiting and retention, talent development, innovation, operational efficiency, and overall employee engagement. They recognize the younger workforce is expecting (and demanding) these tools are available to them on the job. As OD consultants, we must be prepared to help leaders and teams to use these tools in their efforts. Aside from the practical ways these tools accelerate our ability to collaborate to get things done, they also have huge potential to help us find connection and community with colleagues (and global resources) in unprecedented ways. Organizations who want to remain viable will capitalize on these tools. If we are not equipped to help our organizations/clients take advantage of them, we will miss the opportunity to become valuable strategic partners.
